Home Safety Checklist
Entrance/Exterior
- Confirm walkways and stairs are well lit.
- Steps should be non-slip and in good repair.
- Ensure outdoor stairs and walks are free from cracks/holes.
- Handrails must be sturdy and secure. Install sufficient lighting.
Interior/Living Area
- Lights should be bright enough to compensate for limited vision.
- Handrails must be on both sides of the stairway.
- Stairs must have even surfaces free of metal strips or rubber.
- Confirm all rugs are secured with carpet tape or non-skid backing.
- Walkways should be clear of tripping hazards, like low furniture and cords.
- Telephones must be easily accessible.
- Chairs must have armrests to assist with getting up and down.
Kitchen
- Place a non-slip mat in the sink area to soak up spilled water.
- Use a timer to remind yourself of food cooking.
- Always turn pot handles to the back or center of the stove.
- Have a fire extinguisher easily reachable and know how to use it.
Bathroom
- Tub and shower must have rubber mats or non-skid surfaces.
- Ensure grab bars are appropriately placed and secure.
- Confirm you can get on/off the toilet seat safely.
Bedroom
