Health and Recovery Practice
Health and Recovery Practice, (HARP) program is a partnership between the University of Maryland Faculty Physicians and the University of Maryland School of Medicine created to improve the health and well-being of individuals who use or have used drugs. HARP provides comprehensive primary care in a trauma-sensitive, team-based environment while serving as a teaching and research clinic for substance use recovery.
Services
HARP offers a variety of comprehensive health screenings for diseases such as:
- Diabetes
- Hypertension
- Tuberculosis Exposure
- HIV (viremic and out of care)
- Hepatitis C Viremia
- Hepatitis B Viremia
- Acute Sexually Transmitted Diseases
Patients receive routine physicals, vaccination history reviews, cancer screenings and screenings for social determinants of health.
Treatment and Support
Our clinic promotes health education and behavioral changes through:
- Overdose prevention education
- Family planning and contraception services
- PrEP for HIV prevention
- Narcan dispensing
- Case management and social work
- Peer support model
Program Benefits
- On-demand primary care and routine urgent care, no appointment needed. This helps reduce unnecessary emergency room visits for minor health issues.
- If a patient visits the emergency room and is discharged, we provide follow-up acute care services to prevent readmission and future ER visits.
- Connect to Care program helps patients enroll in substance abuse and medical services. We work closely with hospitals, emergency departments, and other providers to ensure easy access. Our team follows up with referred patients who miss their intake appointments.
