Transplant Surgery

Our team of experts performs more than 450 transplants each year, with expertise in abdominal and thoracic organ transplantation, including liver, heart and adult living donor liver transplantation.

Transplantation is a complex, long-term process, which is why we form a multidisciplinary team of experts at the earliest pre-operative evaluation who remain involved throughout hospitalization and follow-up. In addition to both medical and surgical specialists in the specific transplant areas, the team includes carefully selected experts from a wide range of specialties, including infectious disease, psychiatry, nutrition, social services, physical therapy and more.

Additional consultants, as indicated by medical condition or coexisting diseases, are immediately available and are called in as necessary.

Services available at our Waldorf location:

  • Dialysis Access consults and follow-up
  • Liver Transplant consults and follow-up
  • Kidney Transplant consults and follow-up

Entering the Transplant Program

Before we list you for a transplant, we will evaluate you. This evaluation helps us determine your placement on the waiting list for a transplant. As part of the evaluation, we will:

  • Perform a thorough physical examination
  • Study your medical records
  • Check if your other organs are strong enough for surgery
  • Describe the transplant in detail
  • Explain what happens after transplant, including the medications you will need to take
  • Ask about your insurance, finances and who will help care for you after surgery

The transplant evaluation takes about four hours. It includes meetings with our transplant team, as well as medical exams and the chance to ask questions. We encourage your support person or caregiver and potential living organ donors to attend the initial evaluation with you.

Prior to your evaluation, our nurse coordinator will be in touch to discuss the process more in depth, and what you need to bring to your evaluation.
