Recognized Leader in Bariatric Surgery

Since 2007, the University of Maryland has been a recognized Center of Excellence by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) for our bariatric surgery program. All bariatric surgeries are held at University of Maryland Medical Center, which boasts 32 all-private rooms for the comfort and safety of our bariatric patients. The specially designed rooms feature:

  • Extra-sturdy bathroom fixtures for your support if you need to lean on them 

  • Loveseats that fold flat for loved ones to stay overnight 

  • Sturdy, large beds and furniture

  • Wider doorways

Our bariatric surgery program is led by Mark Kligman, MD, assistant professor of surgery at University of Maryland School of Medicine and director of the UM Center for Weight Management and Wellness. 

Dr. Kligman is an expert in laparoscopic (minimally invasive) procedures for weight loss, and has achieved an outstanding success rate and an extremely low complication rate in bariatric surgery. He specializes in laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery, also known as Roux-en-Y.
